Manheim

Manheim in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany: A town that is more than 1,000 years old is set to be demolished in 2024—not because of coal, but to extract enough soil to stabilize the edge of the nearby open-pit mine. Only a handful of the 1,700 people still live in the town, which has almost completely disappeared—and they still put their trash cans out on the street.
